Major Tom is a fictional astronaut created and referred to by David Bowie in numerous songs. Having its debut on the 1969 song "Space Oddity", it tells the story of his journey throughout space. The character appeared again in the song "Ashes to Ashes", from the 1980 LP Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). In this song, Major Tom is then described as a junkie and an alcoholic. He is further referred to in the other two songs: "Hello Spaceboy" and "Blackstar".
David Bowie plays Major Tom in a music video, in the 1969 promotional film: Love you till Tuesday.
