The song tells a story about a woman named Mary who presumably was a bartender. She then changed her name to Tommy and enrolled in the army. To become a Medic.After fighting for her country for a while she deserted her post a day before a bomb dropped which left no survivors. A lot of folklore went around about her, saying she was dead. She in fact didn't die and moved to London and changed her name to Eileen.
